Abstract: The osseointegration-based dental implant has become a well accepted treatment method for complete and partial edentulism. However, dental implant failures still remain in some cases, varying with implantation sites and patients. Osseointegration of the dental implant is crucial for its long-term clinical success. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the use of paramagnetic materials in dental implant fields. Preliminary studies indicated that static magnetic fields could improve cell attachment and proliferation of human osteoblast-like cells. It has been shown that magnetic stimulation has an important role in bone tissue metabolism and the osseointegration of dental implants. Moreover, iron-incorporated hydroxyapatite nanoparticles are found to accelerate bone regeneration compared to the commercially available pure hydroxyapatite nanoparticles. Considering these attractive features of paramagnetic materials and iron-incorporated hydroxyapatite, we hypothesized that a novel bi-functional composite of paramagnetic Fe-hydroxyapatite coating, which has a combination of bone-bonding bioactivity and a paramagnetic property, can be designed and used clinically to enhance the osseointegration and shorten the healing period of dental implants.
